Microsoft is launching a new command line tool know as Windows Terminal.Microsoft designed this tool to be the central location for access to environments like PowerShell, Cmd, and the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

What is Windows Terminal?

It is a new, modern, fast, efficient, powerful, and productive terminal application for users of command-line tools and shells like Command Prompt, PowerShell, and WSL.As stated by Microsoft.

The Windows Terminal or Windows Command line also referred as Microsoft Command Line.It will be available in the Microsoft Store and will get updates regularly.

Multiple Tabs :

New Windows Terminal will have multiple terminals.This feature is one of the most frequently requested feature.So Microsoft worked on it and include it on the Terminal.

That means you can open any number of tabs,each connected to a command line shell or App of your choice.For example Command Prompt, PowerShell, Ubuntu on WSL, a Raspberry Pi via SSH, etc.

The new Terminal uses a GPU accelerated DirectWrite/DirectX-based text rendering engine.

In other words this new text rendering engine will display text characters, glyphs, and symbols present within fonts on your PC, including CJK ideograms, emoji, powerline symbols, icons, programming ligatures, etc.

In short the Terminal will support emoji and GPU-based text rendering.

In addition Users can use windows new fonts.It will help users to create a fun, new, monospaced font to enhance the modern look and feel of the Terminal.

More ever not only will this font include programming ligatures, but it will also be open sourced and have its own repository.

Configuration and Settings :

The Terminal provides many settings and configuration options that give you a great deal of control over the Terminal’s appearance and each of the shells/profiles that you can open as new tabs.

Settings are stored in a structured text file making it easy for users and/or tools to configure.

By Using Terminal’s configuration mechanism, uers will be able to create multiple “profiles” for each shell/app/tool users want to use, whether it be PowerShell, Command Prompt, Ubuntu, or even SSH connections to Azure or IoT devices.

These profiles can have their own combination of font styles and sizes, color themes, background blur/transparency levels, etc.

You can now create your own custom-styled Terminal that is personalized to your unique taste.

This new tool is totally focused on command line users.The terminals are easy to use,fast,powerful and best for development projects.So why Microsoft didn’t contributing on existing open source terminal projects.

Well Microsoft’s involvement in an existing project would require changing the project’s requirements and architecture in ways that would be too disruptive.So they develop and create a new terminal for windows users.

In addition to this open source project they also open sourced the Microsoft Console.Which hosts the command-line infrastructure in Windows and provides the traditional Console UX.

This is a new tool.It will help the users to use the system more technically. For developers it will help for development and build better user experience.
